HOW TO HOLD AND USE THE PICK
Curve the fingers in towards the palm of the hand and place the pick on the side of the first finger. Press
the ball of the thumb over the pick, allowing the tapered end to extend beyond the fingers as depicted on the preceding page. Stroking is mostly a wrist movement down and up across the strings. Arch the wrist and Slant the tapered
end of the pick towards you. The pick must be slanted to produce smooth even strokes. For detailed explanation, refer to "Strumming Suggestions For Practice" immediately below the next picture illustration. |

The strokes are made with the first or index finger which must be perfectly limp. Arch the wrist and use the
na/7 for the Down-stroke and the cushion for the UP-stroke. Stroking is mostly a wrist movement down and up across the strings and absolute flexibility of the wrist is essential. |

STRUMMING SUGGESTIONS FOR PRACTICE
Hold the ukulele in playing position, arch the wrist and strum with pick or finger on the four open strings,
using only the Down-Stroke.. Practice in groups of 4 strokes at a time, to the tempo of a mental, count of ? and 2 and 3 and 4. Repeat until the stroke is smooth and even, then add an Up-Stroke, practicing down- up, down-up, etc. Remember absolute flexibility of the wrist is essential, the arm should not move promiscuously. |
